I shipped before the interview

Second year, tier-3 college, no referrals. The thing that got me an SDE internship had nothing to do with DSA.

I was applying regularly on Naukri, Internshala and company websites, and giving interviews. It was mostly rejections: some take-home assignments, a few replies.

Then one application clicked. SystemStar emailed me interview slots along with detailed expectations for the role. That email told me more than the job post had.

Instead of just confirming a slot, I built a small mock aligned with what they actually wanted, and shared it.

They reviewed it and found issues, some of them device-specific. I fixed them and sent updates. We went back and forth like that over several emails.

By the time the interview happened, they already knew how I worked. The call was mostly about where to take the product next.

What I took from it

  • Don’t wait to feel ready before applying.
  • Job descriptions are incomplete by default.
  • Showing work early changes the outcome.

I’m still a student and still learning. But how you engage before the interview can matter more than the interview itself.
